Jiwon Sim is a Korean composer based in Hamburg.

Her work begins with an exploration of the conditions under which sound is produced. She observes vibration and resonance inside instruments, as well as signals and energy flows within electronic systems, treating these physical processes as compositional material.

Working across instrumental, electroacoustic, and multimedia contexts, she creates structures in which sound can emerge, shift, and interact.

Recently, she has been expanding this approach into ensemble and performative settings, exploring the relationships between electronics, space, light, and performers’ movements. Questions that arise from her own social and personal experiences also inform the conceptual layer of her work.

I explore specific acoustic phenomena from a physical perspective, extending these investigations into electronic music and multimedia environments.

My work examines the conditions under which sound emerges, the structural properties of instruments, and the processes of electronic transformation, seeking a deeper understanding of the relationships that connect them.

I am particularly drawn to directly engaging with these physical phenomena through improvisation on instruments, allowing the material properties of sound itself to guide the musical process :D
